I wonder if they had to do rock-paper-scissors to see who would ride the horse?

airlift

connies [click to embiggen]

That is a credible version of my very most favorite aircraft ever, the triple-tailed, dolphin-shaped, gleaming aluminum Lockheed Constellation. Connies weren’t much used in the airlift, but they did play a role, and one of the proudest moments of my life was accompanying my old company’s Connie to Germany for the 50th anniversary of the airlift, and meeting one of the children in that famous image.

Ahh, memories.

That right there is Mrs Bugg in a pirogue — pronounced pee-row. The Bugjins did not travel to Acadibuggiana in pirogues, but Loki will never, ever get over my joke of singing “I’m on a pirogue heading for the sea”. instead of “I’m on a B-road heading for the sea” because my version is funnier.

They look happy in this picture, but that’s before Charles makes Catherine take one of his bits of stuff-on-the-side as a Bugg of the Bedchamber. Those are some cast-iron balls, there, Chuck.

murder, murder, murder

Oh, come on, Mr Bugg. You guys are hard to kill — and besides, the re-enactment was about her acquittal. Mrs Bugg isn’t about to run amok with an axe and risk getting done for murder a second time.

OK, it’ll be nearly 700 years. BUT STILL.

In the meantime, please enjoy this depiction of a great university.

Oh my gods, you guys. SO MUCH GOOD HERE. Let us sum up:

Lord Byron, John Polidori, Percy Shelley, and Mary Shelley in a dreary Swiss castle during a particularly dreary summer, come up with some of the most enduring works of the Romantic period, including horror stories that inspire literally generations of writers, artists, poets, filmmakers, and others, and play no small part in the shaping of how we see the world and its imagined terrors.

Goths owe a lot to that volcano, is what I’m saying.
